Jim is the Foley Group’s principal and founder. Trained as a Landscape Architect and Land Use Planner (B.S.L.A.1985 – The Ohio State University School of Architecture), he leads the firm’s site design, landscape architectural and land planning projects.

His specialized experience in site design and land planning have been developed through managing over 250 projects across Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Colorado over the past 18 years. Prior to founding the Foley Group in January 2003, much of this work was completed while a partner with Wirth Design Associates, and later with Sand Creek, the Ranch Preservation Company, LLC. This extensive, diverse experience has established Jim as a leading authority on Ranch Master Planning, Conservation Subdivision Planning and Native Landscape/Site Design .

Jim has led planning and design efforts including the management of multi-disciplinary consulting teams for several complex commercial and privately owned ranch preservation projects. Among these are the Silver Bow Club, an exclusive sportsman’s club adjacent to Montana’s Big Hole River; Wagonhound Ranch, a large private ranch in the Laramie Mountains of Wyoming, Sand Creek Ranch Conservation Community and Canyon Creek Ranch in Teton Valley, Idaho. His skill and experience in integrating wildlife, agriculture and recreation within the built environment provides the foundation for successful, sustainable planning that meets unique client objectives.

Jim has also been commissioned to design the sites and landscapes for several unique sites throughout the region. These have included the historic Thextondale Guest House on the Madison River, several exhibits at Zoo Montana, the Faith Chapel Expansion, Blue Creek Shooting Sports Complex, The Alton Residence, The Shiloh Crossings Bike Shop, Grizzly Creek Ranch Guest Facilities and the new Orchard School Playground.

Jim is a registered Landscape Architect, a Member of the American Planning Association, an Associate Member of the Urban Land Institute, and holds CLARB Certification. In recognition of his experience, former Montana Governor Marc Racicot appointed him as chairman of the Montana Landscape Architecture Registration Board in 1995.

Jim lives with his wife Cindy in Billings and avidly pursues sporting clays shooting, fly-fishing and upland bird hunting across the mountain states. Jim also takes special pride in his sporting clays course design, as well as native garden design and landscape restoration projects.
